Studio DEMO x Serpentine: Gastropoetics

June 5, 20263–3:30 PM

New Museum

235 Bowery, New York, NY

Forum, Floor 5

How and what do we metabolise? Serpentine Arts Technologies convenes three socially engaged practitioners whose work with food, gastronomy, and performance reimagines recipes as models for civic intervention, exploring labour, migration, ritual, and systems of social conditioning through acts of cooking and consumption.

Through the live preparation of Kimchi Pikliz, Tao Leigh Goffe explores “gastropoetics” as a framework for understanding migration, memory, and survival. Combining Afro-Caribbean and Asian fermentation traditions, the session considers ancestral food practices as forms of healing, resistance, and revolutionary knowledge. Emerging from Goffe’s teaching and research into diasporic gastronomy, the preparation becomes a meditation on intimacy across oceans and plantations, tracing how recipes carry embodied histories through the microbiome, oral tradition, and collective nourishment.

Studio DEMO is a live broadcast hub at the New Museum, open to drop into throughout the day and available via livestream. Featuring NEW INC's wider creative community, broadcasts take the form of talks, demonstrations, couch conversations, panel discussions, DJ sets, and more. This year, NEW INC partners with peer organizations to build thematic programming for Studio DEMO. Partners include Geidai Project, Onassis Foundation, Rhizome, Serpentine, YoungArts.
