Studio DEMO x Serpentine: So Rote It Be

June 5, 20263:30–4 PM

New Museum

235 Bowery, New York, NY

Forum, Floor 5

How and what do we metabolise? Serpentine Arts Technologies convenes three socially engaged practitioners whose work with food, gastronomy, and performance reimagines recipes as models for civic intervention, exploring labour, migration, ritual, and systems of social conditioning through acts of cooking and consumption.

So Rote It Be is a performative lecture exploring the recipe as ritual, spell, and social technology. Moving between political theory, culinary history, and performance, quori theodor interrogates how ideology becomes naturalised through everyday acts of eating and preparation. Referencing figures and phenomena ranging from Adorno and RFK to Baked Alaska and the military origins of the restaurant, the work examines the politics embedded within concepts of “normal” food. The audience is invited into an absurdist, choose-your-own adventure experience in which ‘cooking’ becomes an ungovernable practice of disruption, vulnerability, and embodied resistance.

Studio DEMO is a live broadcast hub at the New Museum, open to drop into throughout the day and available via livestream. Featuring NEW INC's wider creative community, broadcasts take the form of talks, demonstrations, couch conversations, panel discussions, DJ sets, and more. This year, NEW INC partners with peer organizations to build thematic programming for Studio DEMO. Partners include Geidai Project, Onassis Foundation, Rhizome, Serpentine, YoungArts.
