Be Oakley is an artist, writer, and publisher based in Ridgewood, Queens. In 2015 they started GenderFail, a publishing outlet that seeks to instigate work that expands queer subjectivity. GenderFail’s core model is not non-for-profit but rather profit-for-survival or profit-to-continue-our-work-without-other-means-of-capital, and most importantly to make money for the contributors they publish, and to create profit-for-labor. With GenderFail, Oakley has published over 120 editioned publications, featuring works by Legacy Russell, A.L. Stiener, Abigail Lucien, Paul Soulellis, Lex Brown, Morgan Bassichis, Eileen Myles, Pamela Sneed, Viva Ruiz, E. Jane, and many more. GenderFail publications can be found in library collections at the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Tate Modern, and over 100 others. Oakley was awarded a 2022–25 Robert Rauschenberg Foundation Grant for their ongoing work with GenderFail.
